Question
Two years ago, director Sebastian Welker started working on a project that would combine the classical components of opera with modern technology in the form of virtual reality. 360-degree videos had to provide a new insight into an existing opera piece. For this, Sebastian was looking for the right hardware and a way to convey his innovative and creative idea to all 150 visitors.
Solution
For the virtual reality opera, VR Expert was involved in the project as a hardware expert. The Pico G2 4K was chosen as the VR headset for the opera. The VR glasses work on a battery and can therefore be used without a cable. The built-in 4K screen provides sharp images and an immersive VR experience. VR Expert has lent 150 Pico G2 4K to the Musiktheater im Revier for the opera play.
All 150 headsets are pre-installed and configured with our VR Sync software by VR Expert. With our VR Sync software it was possible to have the videos played synchronized on all 150 headsets through a dashboard. By also including a kiosk mode on the VR Sync software, we ensured that no user could be accidentally taken out of the experience.
Finally, a team of our event supporters went to the theater building to prepare the entire VR experience. They were also present at the performances to ensure that everything went smoothly.
Result
This has resulted in the various performances being a great success. The videos played effortlessly and the feedback from the audience was very positive. One of the first hybrid live & VR operas was a fact and opened up a new world for the theater.
